As we approach the 2025 hurricane season, experts are forecasting an above-average level of activity in the Atlantic—but with a lower-than-usual risk for Florida’s Atlantic coast. For homeowners in Boca Raton and surrounding areas, this is a reassuring outlook, but not a reason to let your guard down.
According to the latest report from Colorado State University’s Department of Atmospheric Science, the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to bring:
17 named storms (20-year average: 14)
9 hurricanes (average: 7)
4 major hurricanes (average: 3)
85 named storm days (average: 69)
This forecast is driven by warmer-than-normal Atlantic waters and potential La Niña conditions in the Pacific—both of which can enhance the formation of strong storms.
Florida Outlook for 2025 Hurricane Forecast Prediction: Low Strike Risk, High Awareness
While the overall season looks active, the chances of a major hurricane making landfall along Florida’s Atlantic coast are only 26%, down from last year. However, the likelihood of any named storm hitting Florida is still at 92%, with a 35% chance of a major hurricane passing within 50 miles.
Meteorologist Brian McNoldy, from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School, emphasized the importance of not becoming complacent. 2025 Hurricane Forecast Predicts Low Risk for Florida’s Atlantic Coast – But Preparation Is Still Key
“We always need to be paying attention to the storms that are out there—some of them could have our name on them.”
When Should South Florida Be Most Alert?

The peak of hurricane season in South Florida occurs from August to October, with October historically seeing the most storms. During this time, atmospheric conditions are conducive to the formation of tropical storms and hurricanes.
Residents should keep track of updates from meteorological agencies and local authorities from early summer through fall. This involves following forecasts from the National Hurricane Center and local news for storm coverage. Utilizing community resources like emergency management services is also beneficial, and following us on Facebook is crucial for local storm updates and news.
Residents should have a comprehensive hurricane preparedness plan in place before the peak season, which includes an emergency kit, property protection, and family communication plans. Being informed and prepared can greatly reduce the impact of hurricanes and ensure safety.
Past Seasons Show Why Preparedness Matters
In 2024, 18 named storms formed, including five major hurricanes. Hurricane Beryl became the earliest recorded Category 5 storm in the Atlantic and caused widespread destruction in Houston.
Florida has seen similar impacts in the past, including in 2017, when Hurricane Irma devastated parts of the state. These events highlight the unpredictable nature of hurricane seasons—even when forecasts suggest lower risk.
